These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken third-level names remained running.
